The Boots on the Ground series features the people at AMT who do the work out in the field, create the designs, plans, and analyses, and provide support that allows our company to thrive.
In this edition of Boots on the Ground, we feature Silver McElroy, Project Accountant in our Rockville headquarters. Silver has a passion for Christmas and Christmas lights in a way that those of us who put a string or two of lights along our houses do not.
In 2007, Silver and her husband Richard purchased their first light controller, FM transmitter and computer to run it. The controller and computer allowed them to synchronize their Christmas lights to music. They broadcast the music with the FM transmitter so visitors can listen on their car radios. They started out with six songs and approximately 10 strands of lights, six two-foot mini trees, and some deer and spiral trees. Over the years the family has slowly added exhibits and music on to the display like in 2009 when they added a 17-foot mega Christmas tree.
This holiday season will be the family’s 7th year and they now have three controllers, 35 two-foot mini trees, two seven-foot trees, the 17-foot tree, deer, a sleigh, stars, a four-foot wreath, more than 160 strands of lights, 17 songs and miles and miles of extension cords. It takes just under 40 minutes to watch the full show which can be heard within range on 91.7 FM. Setting the show up takes more than a month and Silver and Richard try to have the show running by Thanksgiving weekend and then continue through New Year’s Eve. Visitors can enjoy the show every evening from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., and the New Year’s Eve show will run until after midnight.

Visitors are always welcome; the address for the show is 2655 Deer Park Road, in Finksburg, Maryland. When viewing the show, Silver asks that visitors park in the front yard, facing the house, and to turn your headlights off. If you visit, please be sure to pull completely off the road so as to not impede traffic on Deer Park Road.
In addition to a passion for Christmas, Silver and Richard also have a passion for animals. They work with several rescues in their area fostering cats and kittens that have been pulled from high-kill shelters and given a second chance at life. In addition to fostering, Silver and Richard have 15 cats of their own, two boa constrictors and two bearded dragons. They have their own little petting zoo right in their own home!
If you are looking for a new family member this holiday season, feel free to leave a comment and we will put you in touch with Silver.
