Project Details:

Avens Bridge, which crosses South Holston Lake in Bristol, Virginia, was outdated and wide enough for only one vehicle to cross at a time. A new crossing is under construction and AMT is providing the construction engineering and inspection for the new bridge and demolition of the old one. The bridge is a 1,005-foot continuous steel plate girder structure being built in water over 100 feet deep. Construction requires eight drilled shafts, each of them eight feet in diameter requiring between 150 and 250 cubic yards of self-consolidating concrete. The depth of the water requires that the foundation work be done from barges adding an additional layer of complexity to the project.
