ACEC/MW PRESIDENT - MICHAEL J. WIERCINSKI, P.E.
Please join me in congratulating Michael J. Wiercinski on being elected President of the American Council Engineering Companies (ACEC), Washington Metropolitan Chapter. ACEC is the voice of America's Engineering Industry. ACEC was established in 1905 and has over 5,500 firms as members throughout the country. ACEC Metropolitan Washington was established in 1958, and comprises nearly 100 firms with over 3200 employees. This chapter's membership geographically includes Washington, D.C., Montgomery, Prince George's, Arlington and Fairfax Counties, and the City of Alexandria. Mike has been involved in ACEC/MW and ACEC/MD for more than 15 years.
Mike has served on the Board of Directors and as Chairman and Member on several ACEC/MW and ACEC/MD committees. Over the years, his contributions, efforts, time, and dedication to ACEC, its member firms and AMT are widely recognized, nationally, regionally and locally by the entire ACEC organization. PRATT STREET REDEVELOPMENT
AMT is providing civil engineering services for the beautification of Pratt Street, which was featured on the front page of the Baltimore Sun. This project will entail the redesign of the main artery along Baltimore's Inner Harbor. AMT's partners hope to create "a great series of public spaces" and "reinforce the connection of Baltimore to the harbor...so that wherever you are along the length of the street, you understand the connection of Pratt Street, and Baltimore itself, with water."
ROCKVILLE LIBRARY - BUILDING OF AMERICA AWARD
The Rockville Library project has won a Building of America Award and will be honored in the 2007 / 2008 Real Estate & Construction Review - Eastern Seaboard Edition. AMT provided civil engineering and surveying services, which involved the construction of a 97,000 square foot building which accommodates the Library and other administrative offices, a parking area for 30 to 50 cars, and the construction of an adjacent parking garage.
REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY
INTRODUCE A GIRL TO ENGINEERING DAY
AMT employees presented to approximately 30 high school girls at the MD Engineers Club for "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day". The main goal of the day was to emphasize the need for more women in engineering and to reach the girls with positive messages about math, science and engineering careers. The event also included building a vehicle out of Lifesavers, straws and paper clips with a racing competition to top it all off!
WEBELOS BADGE FOR ENGINEERING
AMT gave a presentation to students at Fallsmead Elementary School and a nearby Cub Scout pack, describing his project site and engineering in general. The children attended the outing to help them earn a Webelos badge for engineering and enjoyed the lesson.
ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS
An AMT employee just returned from a two-week trip to a rural region of South Africa with a group of engineering students from the Johns Hopkins University chapter of Engineers Without Borders (http://www.ewb.jhu.edu). While there, the group installed two ram pumps (http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydraulic_ram) for community gardens managed by a cooperative of women. Traditionally, the women, some of whom are in their 60's, 70's, and even 80's, have had to hike down steep embankments to streams to fetch water. They would then carry this water in buckets, usually rested on their heads, to the gardens to irrigate crops. The pumps reduce the amount of physical labor the women have to endure, allowing them to access water at tap stands located in the gardens.
Stephen found the experience to be "extremely gratifying and humbling. What we take for granted in the developed world is a luxury in other areas." Engineers Without Borders is an organization of volunteers, and without the support of individuals and companies like AMT, who gave a generous financial contribution to EWB-JHU, this important work would not get done.
