The New Market Heights and Varina phases comprise 18 miles of the Virginia Capital Trail, which is a 52-mile trail connecting Virginia’s current capital, Richmond, to its historic capital at Jamestown. The trail is paved throughout its length and serves all forms of non-motorized transportation as it runs parallel to scenic Virginia Route 5. It is the first long-distance, separated, multi-use trail in the region and it addressed the needs of the community in a number of significant ways.
In an extremely culturally sensitive area, the project team came together to balance a wide range of concerns to finish the trail in time for the UCI World Cycling competition, an Olympic-style cycling competition. The team overcame a significant redesign that impacted the schedule through creative project phasing and “top down” bridge construction to complete the trail in time for the event and with as minimal an impact as possible.
