Charles County NPDES Compliance

Charles County, Maryland

On this nationally recognized effort, AMT designed three in-stream wetland facilities in Charles County to exceed National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System requirements. The facilities were located near elementary schools and have become educational opportunities even featuring observation decks with outdoor classrooms.

A National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, or NPDES, compliance review uncovered the need for Charles County to identify areas for improvement within the Carrington Watershed. AMT designed three in-stream wetland facilities in Charles County to exceed the NPDES requirements, two at local elementary schools. We re-routed previously altered stream channels which were affecting stormwater outfalls. We also widened them and added weirs and other mechanisms to create functioning wetlands.

The school sites featured learning opportunities, observation decks and outdoor classrooms. Our Environmental and Water Resources Team guided the rigorous permitting process in collaboration with county planners through the Maryland Department of the Environment Water Management Agency, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the US Army Corps of Engineers.

AMT was honored for our efforts on this project with a National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies and a Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Maryland.
