Avalon Elementary School
Prince George's County, Maryland
The new Avalon Elementary School in Prince George’s County, Maryland was designed to achieve LEED Gold certification. This new “green” building was lauded by county and state officials and is an opportunity for students to learn about sustainability. A significant part of AMT’s involvement in the project included addressing environmental design concerns and permitting.
AMT is providing engineering services in support of a new school facility with site improvements including a new ingress/egress for bus traffic, vehicular traffic, and pedestrian traffic, extensive stormwater management and new parking lots. Our plan preparation includes Preliminary Design, Schematic Design, followed by 50%, 90%, and 100% Design Development.
Natural Resource Inventory, forest conservation, and wetland delineation services were provided at the outset in addition to forest and tree evaluation and inventory, documentation of other natural resources, and wetland permitting. We also provided landscape design services for site plantings for extensive bioretention facilities.
We developed demolition plans, site layouts, storm drainage, site utilities, paving, and entrance plans as well as parking plans featuring layout, grading, lighting, striping, signage, access, and ADA compliance, including van accessible areas. We evaluated the capacities of existing water and sewer site utilities and recommended upgrades.
The stormwater management design provides water quality and water quantity measures permitted through Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation. Our efforts were designed in accordance to State’s Interagency Committee on School Construction/Public School Construction Program requirements.
