Marriot Marquis, Washington, DC
The new Marriott Marquis Hotel sits adjacent to the new Washington Convention Center. AMT LLC worked on the land development design from conception through construction including boundary and topographic surveying, soil borings for geotechnical study, PUD and environmental approvals and permitting, site design, public utility coordination and LEED-certification applications. The Marquis hotels are the top-of-the-line Marriott hotels with only two others in existence.
The project began with razing another building to allow the site’s redevelopment and connecting to the convention center with a tunnel under 9th Street. An underground loading dock connects to the delivery tunnels for the convention center. The building foundation is 100 feet underground and houses the ballrooms, meeting spaces and parking areas.
Beyond the site engineering, AMT LLC performed subsurface utility locating, and designed a water main relocation along Massachusetts Avenue and a water main replacement on L Street. To facilitate the underground connections to the convention center, we also designed first temporary and then permanent sanitary sewer and storm drains.
AMT LLC designed the streetscapes on the hotel’s frontages on Massachusetts Avenue, L and 9th Streets and did some key stormwater management design which helped the facility reach the LEED Silver certification required on all new buildings in the District. The building now boasts a rain harvest design. The water collected is used to supply water to the building cooling tower system.
