Montgomery County Animal Services Facility

AMT provided comprehensive civil engineering design services for the Montgomery County Animal Services Center, a 47,000-square-foot, LEED-Gold facility on seven acres of mostly undeveloped land on the east side of Montgomery County.

The state-of-the-art animal care facility offers specialized areas to house and care for animals, and for the people who work at and use the facility in public-facing ways such as pet owner education. It was designed within budget and conveys an atmosphere of welcome and care.

Considerable site work required close cooperation with, and approvals from, The Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, as well as the State Highway Department regarding acceleration/deceleration lanes and signalization, and the Department of Natural Resources regarding forest stand delineation and environmental concerns.

Located within a Special Protection Area of Montgomery County, the project utilized Low Impact Development methods for stormwater management, and “open” pavement sections that allow sheet flow into grass channels and infiltration trenches. Areas that cannot drain by sheet flow are diverted towards a sand filter with additional stone storage to promote groundwater recharge. The building also features large windows, a green roof, a specialized energy efficient HVAC system and the site has a pole barn with metal siding to care for horses and livestock and a bulk food storage system.
