Patapsco Valley State Park Shoreline Erosion Control

Multiple Counties, Maryland

The Patapsco Valley State Park was Maryland’s first state park, established in 1907serves as the spine for the greenways and provides nearly 14,000 acres of protected land in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, and Howard counties.

When the Patapsco Valley State Park shoreline began showing signs of erosion, the Maryland Park Service and Maryland Department of Natural Resources called on AMT to provide engineering services for 800 feet of shore erosion control. The project used shoreline stone revetment, which is a sloping structure that provides additional support, and two flank walls along the back of the properties to mitigate the erosion. Shore erosion was present at the edge of the back of the properties abutting the Patapsco River and Quarry areas. Minimal bank grading was required to clean up the bank fence and restore disturbed areas.

The project also included a topographic survey, a bathymetric survey, and public and community participation coordination, wetland delineation, and permitting services through the Department of Natural Resources, the Maryland Department of the Environment, and Anne Arundel County.
