UMD Shipley Field
College Park, Maryland
As part of AMT’s Indefinite Delivery Contract (IDC) with the University of Maryland (UMD), AMT was selected to provide design and permitting services, and construction phase services for the renovation to 2,500-seat Shipley Field at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium, the NCAA Division I baseball stadium located on the university’s College Park campus.
AMT’s Facilities Design Team designed and managed the project with support from AMT’s Landscape Architecture Team who provided forest conservation permitting services for the project and structural design for the padded fence and “batters eye” solid fence that had to withstand wind speeds of more than 90 miles per hour. The existing field consisted of a synthetic turf infield and natural grass outfield. In 2010, AMT provided a design to convert the outfield to synthetic turf to match the infield.
When the University switched from the Atlantic Coast Conference to the Big 10 Conference, it completely renovated the field to include new synthetic turf for both the infield and outfield, new fencing around the entire field including padding, a new 20-foot-tall “batter’s eye” fence, new bullpens, lowered dugouts and relocation of the existing score board. In addition to the field design, the project complies with Maryland’s rigorous stormwater management requirements. To meet these requirements, AMT designed an innovative underground stormwater management detention system to store approximately 20,000 cubic feet of stormwater. This extensive SWM storage system reduces impacts to the university storm drainage system and ultimately, the Paint Branch of the Anacostia watershed. To support the University’s 2015 NCAA Regional Champions, AMT met the University’s goal to have the field ready for the 2016 baseball season the following January.
UMD Shipley Field is the 7th athletic field and 4th NCAA Division I field design that AMT has completed for the University’s College Park Campus. AMT’s other fields include the University’s NCAA football, women’s softball, women’s field hockey stadiums and three practice football fields.
