Van Buren Street Bridge, Falls Church, VA
As part of a citywide term contract, AMT provided engineering design services for the replacement of the Van Buren Street Culvert (Structure No. 8003) over Four Mile Run. AMT provided engineering, survey, subsurface utility investigations, environmental permitting, and floodplain modeling. The existing culvert consists of two-cell corrugated metal pipe arches (9’-3” wide by 6’-6” high) that carry two lanes of traffic.
The proposed structure is a 33’-0” reinforced concrete slab superstructure founded on concrete abutments. A pile foundation was selected due to the calculated scour depths and the depth to rock. The structure will provide two (2) 10’-0” lanes and two (2) 1’-6” shoulders. The proposed barriers are an aesthetically pleasing Texas Classic barrier that provides an acceptable crash test rating for the roadway classification.
